Civil Affairs BuildingOfficial Gotcha day was great. Can't say it was better than "Meeting Day" at Evans house though! But....it was SUPER COOL that it was OUR day and that he is OURS.
On our way home from the airport, Evan had to pee. It is customary in China that children just pee on the street. OK......
So the driver pulls over to a safe spot, and the guide, Cindy and I get out. We walked/rushed him over to a spot near a fence and started to undress him. And...undress him, and undress him. He had FIVE layers on, and one of the layers was bib overalls. Toasty. His foster mom is wise. She put him in a pullup/diaper...just in case. Well, that 'just in case' came true! We couldn't get his clothes down in time and he ended up peeing in the diaper, and on his clothes. In hindsight, we are finding that he does not like to pee outside. (We had a little issue at the civil affairs office today with this)
Once we got to the hotel, about 40 minutes away, we checked in and started to get him ready for a bath. That was interesting. Livvy and Jack will spend hours in the bath if I let them. Evan? Not so much. He did his best to fight it, but in the end, cleanliness/Mom and Dad won. He was not happy to put on new/fresh clothes at first. However once he saw them, he wanted them on. He looks like a little wilcox kid now!
After this, we rested just a bit, and met our guide downstairs to go to lunch. Another fun dining experience in China. Fun. there was a giant pan of fish with inverted eyeballs that greeted us. All in all, it wasn't too bad.. but not home.
After lunch, we headed over to get our family photo for the adoption paperwork. We walked down the street, just a block or two for this. The sights along the way were interesting. Cars park on the sidewalks, along with bikes, and scooters. Cars also drive on the sidewalks, along with bikes and scooters. There are roads, but the sidewalks seem to be a popular place to be. Even the birds like it there. We saw quite a few birds in their cages on the sidewalks.
Once our picture was done, we headed over to the civil affairs office to sign paperwork, and make our day "official." There are no car seats in China, and people drive like maniacs. It's interesting.
The civil affairs person was nice. We had some paperwork to fill out and sign. Then we were required to finger print all of our signatures. Evan put his hand print on there as well. He wasn't too keen on getting his hand full of red ink, but when he saw we had, then he did.
We waited around there a little bit for some more documents then went back to the hotel to rest. By this time, I could tell my throat was starting to hurt, and we were all exhausted. After the boys had a good nap, we went over to the italian pizza place in the hotel for dinner. It was nice to eat something that didn't have a head, foot, or at one time did. :0)
Evan is quite the ladies man! He entertained the three waitresses with his smile and antics. Before we left, he gave each one of them a hug, then went around and did it again as he saw how pleased they were. It seems he either feels he has to please, or likes to please others. We have a lot to figure out with this little guy.
I think our gotcha day is a little different than most, as we really had gotcha day on Monday when we met him and went over to his home, we just didn't take him home that day. What a blessing for him, and his foster family and us to have it this way so that the transition is easier.

Sarah had three layers of clothes on when we got her, plus a vest and a scarf! And it was a warm day! :)
