Today we ran into Wal*art to pick up a few odds and ends. Liv and Jack insisted that he must have a gift card. They politely argued that he's never had one before. Yeah, I'm sure that's probably true. It made me think about how very different his life is now. Gift cards are the norm here in the States. I could not imagine going to the market in his little town in China and whipping out my debit or gift card to pay for my peaches. Yet, that's normal here. He won't know how to use that gift card, but like any kid...he'll learn real fast. We bought him an Elmo See-n-Peek. "Highly educational"...and loud. He'll love it. He already tried it out at Target. Then the other kids secretively slipped it under the car and to the cashier while I distracted him. That's some teamwork!
We, along with the rest of my family here are very excited to celebrate the life of this little boy. The preparations, dinner, Elmo cake, ice cream and goodies pale in comparison as to the meaning of celebrating his life. A birthday not many thought he'd live to see. God knew though, and it's going to be a wicked good time!
